Covered in Prayer – Joshua Vaughan

Lately, Amber and I have really been focusing on covering our household in prayer. There are a lot of things we face each day that can really get us down, take our focus off of God, and cause us to worry. Seems like it’s just been one thing after another.

We’ve been in the process of selling our house. It was supposed to close a month ago and we were really looking forward to our finances loosening up a little. But right before the close everything seemed to go wrong and when the house didn’t close, we had to pay extra for insurance, mortgage, and other expenses. Just when we thought we would be a little more comfortable for a season, our plans seemed to change.

At the same time, we’ve been discouraged because our oldest son is not progressing in his speech at the rate that we thought he would. He’s been slower than expected and we started to really worry that something was wrong.  After devoting ourselves to praying more for his speech, we have seen him begin to jabber more. This was a reminder that we cannot let the enemy get the best of our emotions. God’s got it all under control and we need to trust Him with this.

When things don’t go the way we expect, and it isn’t necessarily anyone’s fault, we need to call on God and ask for help. When we’ve done that, God has always opened the right doors and provided for us in ways that we never expected.

But we’re not ignorant of the fact that we will face attacks from an enemy who would love to take us down.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” —1 Peter 5:8

It can be easy to forget that there is an enemy out there seeking to kill and destroy, but we have nothing to fear because we are children of God, and we can fight back with the most powerful weapon: Prayer.

“‘No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from Me,’ declares the Lord.” —Isaiah 54:17

Attacks from the enemy can come in any shape or form. He’s not going to let up, so neither can we. We must remain vigilant in our prayers, knowing that though trials will come, the God we serve is bigger than any trial.
